Diego Luna, as a Michael Jackson wanna-be, and Samantha Morton, as a Marilyn Monroe impersonator (complete with that dress and stunning cleavage), are the star-crossed lovers at the heart of the story. Also living in the commune are Abraham Lincoln (who swears like a trooper), Charlie Chaplin, Shirley Temple, the Pope, the Queen and Sammy Davis Jnr to name a few.
Many odd and humorous escapades follow, intercut with Werner Herzog’s missionary leading his nuns on an air-drop of food parcels for an African village. In a pant-wettingly funny scene one of the parachute-less nuns falls out of the plane and prays to her god to survive – the outcome has to be seen to be believed.
Ultimately this concoction is an acquired taste that may end up with a small cult following.
